Ramona Singer from 'Real Housewives' files for divorce

Divorce can be a difficult process that not many look forward to. This is especially the case when a couple has acquired many assets. A high asset divorce is unique in that there is much property the couple has shared and acquired throughout their marriage that must now be divided.

Ramona and Mario Singer have recently become popular through the television show "Real Housewives." The couple has been married for 22 years and has one daughter. Reports suggest the couple has been having issues for the past several months, but Ramona recently filed for divorce after a confrontation in the couple's home.

Not all high asset divorces end in long, drawn out court proceedings. In fact, some couples are able to sit down with their attorneys and amicably agree about the division of their property. Taking this route towards divorce allows a couple to speak freely in an open environment and address any concerns that they may have. Communication between the couple is key.

When a couple is not able to reach an agreement outside of the courtroom, a judge may have to step in to help the couple divide their assets. In a state like Massachusetts, the judge makes these divisional decisions by way of equitable distribution. This means the judge looks at all of the couple's community property, or property that is shared from the marriage, and divides it in a way that is "fair and just." It is important to note that fair and just does not necessarily equate to a perfect 50/50 split.

Couples facing a high asset divorce must weigh all legal options in order to decide which avenue is best for them. Discussing divorce with an experienced legal professional in Massachusetts allows an individual to assess all of these options and protect his or her rights.
