Amy Poehler, Will Arnett to divorce

Massachusetts readers of this blog may be familiar with comedy actors Will Arnett and Amy Poehler. Arnett appears in "Arrested Development," and Poehler is famous for her role in "Parks and Recreation." Arnett recently filed for divorce from Poehler after nine years of marriage.

The couple announced their separation in September of 2012, but had not made the final step towards divorce until recently. The couple have two young children, and Arnett has asked the court to order joint legal and physical custody, with rights of visitation.

When a couple such as Arnett and Poehler face divorce, there are many issues to address. During the course of their marriage, a couple acquires a number of assets that must now be divided.

A court in the state of Massachusetts will divide this marital property by way of equitable distribution. When a court does this they consider each of the assets and divide them in a "fair and just manner." For example, a vehicle bought by a husband directly after his big paycheck that is only used by him, may be awarded to him upon divorce. The court may not consider it "fair and just" to give the vehicle to the wife, especially if she already owns and possesses a vehicle.

The complexity involved in a high asset divorce in the state of Massachusetts can create unique legal issues throughout the divorce proceedings. Individuals with high net worth are encouraged to discuss their situation with an experienced legal professional in order to best protect their rights.
