Man who owes $555,876 in child support arrested

When a child's parents are no longer living together and sharing a child's everyday expenses, Massachusetts family courts will step in and enact a child support order at the request of the custodial parent. This order dictates that one of the parents, typically the one who does not have physical custody of the child, will give the custodial parent a set amount of money to help with the child's expenses. When these payments are not received, the parent in default may have to suffer the consequences.

Recently in Illinois, a man was arrested after a warrant had been issued for his arrest. The warrant had been issued in 2008, but the man had avoided custody up until now. The man owes a total of $555,876 in past due support payments for his three children. The man was taken to jail, posted bail and now has a court date scheduled in the future in order to face the consequences of his actions.

When child support obligations are avoided, the child is often the one to suffer. Because Massachusetts's courts understand the impact on children, they will often implement methods to get the payment from the parent owing money. The justice system may withhold money from the payor's paycheck or other government benefits to fulfill this payment. They also can restrict the payer from obtaining a driver's license, or revoke a current license they hold. As a last resort, the court can impose jail time for missed payments.

Parents that have physical custody and support their children often struggle to make ends meet when child support obligations are not met. These parents are able to discuss their situation with an experienced legal professional in the state of Virginia and assess their options to enforce payment and protect their legal rights.
