Melanie Griffith files for divorce from Antonio Banderas

When a celebrity couple decides to get divorced, many complications can arise. Many of the most difficult questions pertain to the division of the couple's property. Celebrity couples often have a high number of assets and dividing those assets can prove challenging.

It has recently been confirmed that Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas will become another couple who has to navigate the waters of asset division during divorce. Griffith filed the divorce papers about a week ago, claiming irreconcilable difference as the reason for divorce.

Although the couple has decided to make the split, it is anticipated that they will work through negotiations in dividing their property. The couple owns real estate located in the United States, as well as in Spain. Griffith has asked the court for custody, child support and spousal support.

When a couple with a high number of assets decides to divorce in the state of Massachusetts, they must do so according to Massachusetts law. Some of these couples are able to discuss the terms of their divorce and negotiate ways to divide their property. Other couples, however, may have to sort out these issues in court.

When a couple divides their property through the Massachusetts court system, a judge divides the community property in a way that is 'fair and just.' Fair and just does not mean that the property must be split evenly, just that the division is done in a way that is unbiased and takes all considerations into account.

Individuals facing divorce in the state of Massachusetts are best able to advocate for themselves when they have the assistance of an experienced legal professional. These professionals are able to help individuals protect their legal rights and assets.
